The former church was dedicated to
San Costanzo - or Saint Constantius - a third-century
bishop of Perugia who is believed to have been martyred
by Roman legionaries in the district. Despite centuries
of neglect and ill-treatment it remained almost
intact, with its high barrel-vaulted ceiling and
sturdy limestone walls. Under the direction of German
architect Martin Stubenrauch, it was recently restored
to its former beauty with refined modern additions.
